t’s known that in some countries like China Japan and Russia, mushrooms are traditionally used as medicine. The studies about the medical uses of mushrooms are still far from conclusion but we can’t forget that this research has already discovered new drugs like penicillin, ciclosporin, griseofulvin, cephalosporin and ergometrine, as well as statins used to treat high cholesterol. Not all mushrooms have the same medical possibilities but the most shared by the highest number of species are anti-cancer, immune system stimulation, antiviral and antimicrobial properties. In vitro experiments show that many mushrooms have antiviral and antimicrobial properties. They have to produce such compounds, in order to live in the wild, because they don’t have immune systems like animals or thick cellulose cell walls like plants, which protect from competing or pathogenic organisms.
