Tan skin is all the rage in the world of both runway fashion and practical style. It is a mainstay, a far cry from modern fashion’s roots in the Victorian era. Symbolic of health and activity, tan skin well complements toned bodies and modern fashions. However, tanning can be troublesome, even outright damaging to individuals that do not take proper precautions. Tanning occurs when ultraviolet radiation bombards and destroys strands of DNA in the epidermal layer, causing darker pigmentation to rise to the surface. While this sun exposure is what causes the healthy brown look, it is also responsible for melanoma, one of the most severe forms of skin cancer-as well as sunspots, premature aging and other, more frivolous side effects that, while not fatal, still detract from the healthy look a nice tan can grant. The following are some basic tips that will help protect you should you decide to go for a more exotic hue.
1.) Drink more water. Water rejuvenates the skin and wards off signs of aging all on its own by easing and enhancing the regenerative processes that your body’s cells undergo on a constant basis. Keeping hydrated keeps your skin healthier, which will help ward off the detrimental effects of tanning as well as making your tanned skin look even nicer and healthier. Drinking water is especially helpful for individuals tanning in the sun, who might be prone to dehydration.
2.) Use sun tan lotion. Sunscreen often limits tanning, but sun tan lotion is specially formulated to allow your skin to tan without burning clean through. Sun tan lotion protects the lower layers of skin when rubbed in while still letting the upper layers tan. This protects the more vulnerable layers of skin.
3.) Limit your tanning sessions. Using more than one tanning session over time, whether you’re in a booth or out in the sun, will do wonders to protect your skin. Tanned skin tolerates the harsh rays of the sun much better than pale skin. Tanning a bit, then tanning more later is known as ‘building a base tan’, and is a very effective means by which to keep your skin healthy for years to come if you intend to tan frequently. Limiting the length of your tanning sessions is also the best means by which to avoid sunburn, which can be quite uncomfortable and have long term harmful ramifications.
4.) Consider alternatives. While natural tans are by far the best, supplementing a natural tan with a spray-on can help get you the rich, dark hue you want while minimizing damage over time. Many sunless tan products are not quite up to snuff, but supplementing a natural tan, many are satisfied with their results.
5.) Keep things in perspective. If you have naturally fair skin, working up a dark tan will take time and care. Never enter a situation expecting to become perfectly bronzed in an hour, even if you have the finest of products behind you.
Keeping your skin healthy while tanning is a crucial concern. Tanning recklessly can cause very great discomfort in the short term and be extremely damaging in the long term. Taking proper precautions and keeping yourself in the best possible health makes tanning a viable practice, however. As with all things, stay safe and sane in your practice, and always do your research ahead of time.
